Field Notes
Standard gear in every pack as a dirty water carrier paired with the Sawyer Squeeze. Fill from the stream, screw on the Squeeze, squeeze filtered water into my Nalgene. The SoftBottle takes the place of a dedicated dirty water vessel without adding meaningful weight. I replace it every 2 seasons as the material starts to feel slightly cloudy inside.

How It Compares
Common Questions
Does Platypus SoftBottle work with Sawyer Squeeze?
Yes — the 28mm thread is the standard water bottle size that the Sawyer Squeeze threads directly onto. Fill the SoftBottle with stream water, attach the Squeeze, and squeeze filtered water into your clean container. This is the most common water treatment setup for AT hikers.
Is Platypus SoftBottle dishwasher safe?
Hand wash only — high heat can degrade the polyethylene and cause the material to cloud or develop a plastic taste. Rinse with warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and allow to dry with the cap off.
How durable is the Platypus SoftBottle?
More durable than it looks — the materials are resistant to puncture in normal use. Avoid sharp objects and do not pack it where tent stakes or pole tips can contact it. With reasonable care, it lasts 2-3 seasons of regular use before the material starts to cloud.
Can you freeze a Platypus SoftBottle?
Not recommended — freezing can cause the seams to weaken over time. For cold water, add ice cubes rather than freezing the filled bottle. The materials are cold-tolerant but not rated for repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
