Field Notes
Five years of regular use on day hikes and AT overnights. I have never had a CamelBak Crux leak or fail. The biggest maintenance lesson: empty and hang to dry with the top open after every use. Stored full or sealed, any bladder grows mold within a week.
Five years, zero failures — the bladder that works every time
Who This Is For
The CamelBak Crux is right for: day hikers and backpackers who want on-the-move hydration without stopping, anyone who has had mold issues with cheaper bladders, and hikers who prioritize reliability over price.

How It Compares
Common Questions
How do you clean a CamelBak bladder?
Empty, rinse with warm water, drain, then hang open to dry completely. For deep cleaning: add 2 tablespoons of baking soda and warm water, shake, then rinse. CamelBak Cleaning Tabs ($8 for 8 tablets) are the easiest solution for regular maintenance. Dry completely before storage — never store sealed with moisture inside.
Can a CamelBak bladder be frozen?
Do not freeze a full CamelBak — water expands when frozen and can damage the seams. Partially fill (50-60%) if freezing for ice water. The reservoir material is cold-weather tolerant but not designed for freezing under pressure.
How long does a CamelBak last?
With proper care (drying after use, occasional deep cleaning), a CamelBak Crux should last 3-5 years. The first signs of aging are a slightly plastic taste (replace the reservoir) and valve stiffness (replace just the valve, ~$8). CamelBak sells all replacement parts separately.
Does the CamelBak Crux work with non-CamelBak packs?
Yes — the CamelBak Crux uses standard hydration pack connections (1/4-inch tube diameter) that are compatible with virtually all hydration packs from Osprey, Gregory, REI, and others. The tube length (36 inches) fits most pack configurations.
