Field Notes
My most-used piece of backcountry gear over four years. Used it on AT sections in Virginia every weekend last fall, on multiple Smoky Mountain day hikes, and at a campsite on the Outer Banks where the water source was questionable. The only issue I had was forgetting to backflush after a trip with silty water — flow rate dropped noticeably. Backflushed it at home in 5 minutes and it was back to normal.
Who This Is For
The Sawyer Products Squeeze Filter ranks #1 of 4 in this category and is one of the strongest options in this category. It is well-suited for hikers and campers who want Sawyer Products is a Florida-based outdoor company. The Squeeze is the most widely used backcountry water filter in North America — 3oz, 0.1 micron hollow fiber, and a genuine lifetime warranty, and it performs best when used for the purpose it was designed around.
I review gear the way most people actually use it — weekend trips in the mid-Atlantic, day hikes on the AT, car camping in the Smokies and down at the Outer Banks. Not expedition use, not extreme conditions. Normal outdoor life for normal people, and occasionally with kids along who provide their own kind of honest product feedback.
