Field Notes
Tested on a 14-mile loop in Shenandoah National Park and a series of 6-8 mile day hikes along the Blue Ridge Parkway in fall. In wet conditions coming off Humpback Rocks, the Robic nylon shed water well. The one thing I missed was a dedicated side water bottle pocket — on warmer hikes I had to stop to access water, which the hipbelt pocket partially solves but only for smaller bottles.
Who This Is For
The Gossamer Gear G4-20 ranks #1 of 4 in this category and is one of the strongest options in this category. It is well-suited for hikers and campers who want Gossamer Gear builds obsessively light packs out of Austin, Texas. The G4-20 is 14.8oz empty with a removable framesheet, smart pocket layout, and a lifetime warranty that actually gets honored, and it performs best when used for the purpose it was designed around.
I review gear the way most people actually use it — weekend trips in the mid-Atlantic, day hikes on the AT, car camping in the Smokies and down at the Outer Banks. Not expedition use, not extreme conditions. Normal outdoor life for normal people, and occasionally with kids along who provide their own kind of honest product feedback.
