How to Pick a Day Hike Backpack

I have been through a lot of packs. Most people overthink volume and underthink fit. A 25L pack that fits you well beats a 35L pack that does not, every time.

Volume: 20-28L covers 95% of day trips

For a normal 6-10 mile day hike with water, snacks, a layer, and a first aid kit, 20-25L is plenty. Going bigger just means you fill the space with stuff you do not need.

Weight matters more than you think

Day packs do not carry enough weight to require a heavy suspension. A thin framesheet and a basic hipbelt is plenty. When you are doing this every weekend, ounces add up over miles and years.

The warranty question

I would rather buy from a brand that stands behind their gear for years than save $30 and deal with a failed zipper with no recourse. The packs ranked highest here have warranties that mean something.
