Zpacks Nero 20
#2 — Lightest Option

Zpacks Nero 20 Review (2026)

6.6oz in Dyneema — the lightest serious day pack you can buy

★★★★★
9.4/10
Reviewed by William • Updated April 2026$225

The Zpacks Nero is for hikers who have gone light and want to go lighter. At 6.6oz it weighs less than most water bottles. The DCF fabric is pound-for-pound stronger than aluminum and highly water-resistant. The tradeoff is that this is a frameless pack, so if you load 20-plus pounds it will feel soft. For day hikes where you are carrying 10-14 lbs it is wonderful. Zpacks is a small Florida operation that builds every pack to order and stands behind them for 10 years.

Field Notes

Used on morning hikes out of a campsite at Jordan Lake, NC — mostly 5-8 miles with light loads. Perfect in that context. Also tried it on a longer 12-mile day with a full camera kit and extra layers, and it started to feel shapeless past the halfway point. Know what you are buying it for.

Who This Is For

The Zpacks Nero 20 ranks #2 of 4 in this category and is one of the strongest options in this category. It is well-suited for hikers and campers who want Zpacks builds packs out of DCF (Dyneema Composite Fabric) in Florida. The Nero 20 is frameless at 6.6oz and made to order with a 10-year warranty, and it performs best when used for the purpose it was designed around.

I review gear the way most people actually use it — weekend trips in the mid-Atlantic, day hikes on the AT, car camping in the Smokies and down at the Outer Banks. Not expedition use, not extreme conditions. Normal outdoor life for normal people, and occasionally with kids along who provide their own kind of honest product feedback.

Common Questions

Is DCF actually waterproof?
The fabric is highly water-resistant but the seams on the Nero are not taped. In a real downpour, moisture can enter through seams. A lightweight liner handles this.
What is the Zpacks warranty?
10 years covering manufacturing defects. Zpacks customers consistently report excellent after-sale service.
Is this pack for beginners?
Not really. If you are new to hiking, a pack with a framesheet will be more forgiving.
