Western Mountaineering Ultralite 20
#3 — Best Traditional Sleeping Bag

Western Mountaineering Ultralite 20 Review (2026)

Made in Santa Cruz since 1967 — the standard for full-enclosure bags

If you want a traditional full-enclosure sleeping bag and want the best one, Western Mountaineering is the answer. They have been making bags in Santa Cruz since 1967. At $549 it is an investment, but this is genuinely a lifetime purchase. My father-in-law has had his WM bag for 22 years. The lifetime warranty backs that up and the construction quality is in a different category from what you will find at a retail chain.

Field Notes

Borrowed a WM Ultralite for a winter night in Shenandoah where the temperature dropped to 18F. It kept me genuinely comfortable without a liner. The anatomical hood shaped to my head and sealed warmth without being claustrophobic. This is a bag you buy once and tell your kids about.

Who This Is For

The Western Mountaineering Ultralite 20 ranks #3 of 4 in this category and is a solid pick with some tradeoffs worth knowing. It is well-suited for hikers and campers who want Western Mountaineering has made sleeping bags in Santa Cruz, California since 1967. The Ultralite uses 850 fill power goose down and is built to a standard most competitors simply do not reach, and it performs best when used for the purpose it was designed around.

I review gear the way most people actually use it — weekend trips in the mid-Atlantic, day hikes on the AT, car camping in the Smokies and down at the Outer Banks. Not expedition use, not extreme conditions. Normal outdoor life for normal people, and occasionally with kids along who provide their own kind of honest product feedback.

Common Questions

Is a $549 sleeping bag worth it?
If you camp regularly for years and want one bag that never fails you, yes. Amortized over 20 years of use, the cost per night is trivial. If you camp a handful of times a year, the REI Magma 15 gives you 90% of the performance at 60% of the price.
Can the WM Ultralite be repaired?
Yes — Western Mountaineering offers repair services and their warranty is genuine.
How does it compare to an EE Revelation quilt?
The WM Ultralite is a traditional bag with full enclosure. The EE Revelation is a quilt. Pick based on whether you want full enclosure or are ready to commit to the quilt system.
