Sea to Summit Ether Light XT Insulated
#3 — Best Ultralight Runner-Up

Sea to Summit Ether Light XT Insulated Review (2026)

14.6oz, R-3.2, ultra-packable — best for warm three-season use

★★★★★
8.6/10
Reviewed by William • Updated May 2026 $200

The Sea to Summit Ether Light XT Insulated sits between the NeoAir and the Tensor in most specs — lighter than the Tensor, cooler than the NeoAir, and the most packable of the three. The 420g weight with R-3.2 covers mid-Atlantic conditions from late spring through early fall without issue. Where it wins is pack volume: the flat valve and ultra-thin materials compress to a fraction of a liter, making it ideal for hikers with smaller packs who need every cubic inch.

TrailCraft Score

What I Liked

  • 14.6oz — excellent weight for a 3-season insulated pad
  • Most packable inflatable in this category
  • Soft-touch outer surface is quieter than NeoAir
  • Multifunctional valve for easy inflation and deflation
  • Available in multiple widths and lengths

Limitations

  • R-3.2 — coolest of the insulated inflatables tested
  • $200 — same price as warmer competitors
  • Less durable than Therm-a-Rest for rough terrain camping
  • Narrower at 20" standard (just fits most adults)

Field Notes

Used on a June AT day hike overnighter in Maryland and a September car camping trip to the Outer Banks. At 55°F both nights, R-3.2 was perfectly sufficient with a 20°F quilt. The pack volume is impressive — it fits in a side pocket of the Gossamer G4-20. I do not use this as my cold-season pad, but for shoulder season and summer it is the most convenient pad I own.

14.6oz, packs to nearly nothing — the pad that disappears into your pack until you need it

Who This Is For

The Ether Light XT Insulated is right for: warm-season and shoulder-season backpackers (late April through October in the mid-Atlantic), ultralight hikers with small packs who need every cubic inch, and hikers who want a comfortable 3-season pad without NeoAir noise levels.

I review gear the way most people actually use it — weekend trips in the mid-Atlantic, day hikes on the AT, car camping in the Smokies and down at the Outer Banks. Normal outdoor life for normal people.

Common Questions

What does R-3.2 mean for camping temperature?
R-3.2 keeps you adequately insulated from the ground in 3-season conditions — roughly 30°F and above for average sleepers. For consistent nights below 30°F or cold sleepers, move up to R-4 or higher. The Ether Light XT is best for late spring through early fall use in the mid-Atlantic.
How does Sea to Summit compare to Therm-a-Rest?
Both make excellent sleeping pads. The Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite NXT (R-4.5) is warmer per ounce than the Ether Light XT (R-3.2) and has a stronger US brand reputation. The Ether Light XT is more packable and has a softer feel. For warmth priority, Therm-a-Rest. For packability and noise preference, Sea to Summit.
Is the Sea to Summit Ether Light durable?
The Ether Light XT has a lightweight 40D nylon shell — more durable than ultralight pads but less tough than standard camping pads. Use a groundsheet on rough terrain, avoid pitching on exposed gravel and rock, and store away from sharp objects.
What is Exkin Platinum insulation?
Exkin Platinum is Sea to Summit's metallic film insulation inside the Ether Light XT that reflects radiant body heat. Similar in function to Therm-a-Rest's ThermaCapture, it boosts R-value without adding weight. The result is R-3.2 at 14.6oz, which is competitive with heavier alternatives.
