Repel 100 (98.11% DEET)
#4 — Best for Extreme Conditions

Repel 100 (98.11% DEET) Review (2026)

10-hour protection at 98% DEET — for extreme conditions, not your typical AT ridge day

★★★★★
8.4/10
Reviewed by William • Updated May 2026 $8

Repel 100 at 98.11% DEET is for extreme insect pressure — deep swamp, Alaska tundra, environments where 30% DEET visibly fails. Not the right choice for typical AT mid-Atlantic hiking where Picaridin or 30% DEET is entirely adequate. It works, it provides 10-hour protection, but it aggressively damages synthetics and plastics. Understand what it is and use it where it is appropriate.

Field Notes

Used in the Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia in May — extreme mosquito pressure where 30% DEET had failed the previous day. At 98.11% it kept insects off for a full paddling day. That specific use case justified it. For AT hiking, 20% Picaridin is dramatically more appropriate.

98% DEET for extreme conditions — when standard repellents visibly fail

Who This Is For

Repel 100 is right for: extreme insect pressure environments (swamps, tundra), certain professional outdoor work, and international travel with heavy vector-borne disease pressure. Not for typical AT trail hiking.

Common Questions

When to use 98% DEET?
Only in extreme insect pressure where lower concentrations clearly fail. For typical US trail hiking, 30% DEET or 20% Picaridin is more than sufficient.
Will it melt gear?
Yes — 98% DEET aggressively dissolves synthetic fabrics, plastics, and finishes. Apply carefully, keep away from gear.
