REI Co-op Magma 15 Review (2026)

850 fill down at mainstream pricing — the right answer for most campers

Most people do not need a custom-sewn quilt with a 6-week lead time. They need a reliable, warm sleeping bag that ships in three days and can be returned if the fit is wrong. The REI Magma 15 is that bag. At $319 with 850 fill power down, it outperforms the price. REI is a consumer cooperative — not a standard retailer — and their house brand gear has improved significantly. It is what I recommend to most people just getting into camping.

Field Notes

Recommended the REI Magma 15 to more friends than any other sleeping bag. Used it from October in the Smokies to March camping near Linville Gorge. Not the lightest thing I own but the most reliable default recommendation for most people.

Who This Is For

The REI Co-op Magma 15 ranks #4 of 4 in this category and is a worthwhile option for the right buyer. It is well-suited for hikers and campers who want REI's house brand Magma 15 delivers 850 fill power down performance at $319. Ships in days not weeks and can be tried in-store before buying, and it performs best when used for the purpose it was designed around.

I review gear the way most people actually use it — weekend trips in the mid-Atlantic, day hikes on the AT, car camping in the Smokies and down at the Outer Banks. Not expedition use, not extreme conditions. Normal outdoor life for normal people, and occasionally with kids along who provide their own kind of honest product feedback.

A note on pricing and links: Prices listed are current as of April 2026 and may change. Always verify before buying. Some links on this page are affiliate links — if you buy through them, I earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It helps fund the testing. It does not change my ranking.

Common Questions

Is the Magma 15 warmer than its rating in practice?
For average sleepers, close to its rating. If you sleep cold, treat it as a 25F bag and add a liner for colder nights.
How does it compare to Marmot or Nemo bags?
The REI Magma uses 850 fill power which is higher than many Marmot or Nemo options at the same price. The co-op return policy is a practical advantage.
Can I try it in-store?
Yes — REI stocks the Magma at most locations.
