Petzl Actik Core Headlamp
#1 — Best Rechargeable Headlamp

Petzl Actik Core Headlamp Review (2026)

450 lumens, USB-C rechargeable Core battery, AAA backup — the headlamp that covers all scenarios

★★★★★
9.1/10
Reviewed by William • Updated May 2026 $55

The Petzl Actik Core solves the rechargeable headlamp problem: what if your battery runs out on a multi-day trip without USB charging? The Core rechargeable battery charges via USB-C when you are near power, but the Actik also accepts standard AAA batteries when it does not. You get the convenience of rechargeable with the field reliability of swappable batteries. At 450 lumens and 2.9oz — lighter than the Black Diamond Spot 400 — it is the best overall headlamp for backpacking.

Field Notes

Tested alongside the Black Diamond Spot 400 on identical AT sections. The Core battery lasted 3 full nights of moderate camp use on one charge. On the 4th night, I swapped in AAA batteries I carry as standard kit. The hybrid system is exactly what overnight backpacking needs — primary USB-C for normal use, AAA fallback for extended trips. The lighter weight (2.9oz vs 3.2oz) is a small but real advantage.

Who This Is For

The Petzl Actik Core is right for: backpackers who want the convenience of rechargeable with the security of swappable battery backup, hikers who want maximum brightness at minimum weight, and anyone doing multi-day trips where USB charging is available at some points.
