Petzl Actik Core
#3 — Lightest Option

Petzl Actik Core Review (2026)

2.6oz from a French company with deep technical heritage

★★★★☆

Reviewed by William • Updated April 2026$65

Petzl is a French company that grew out of caving and climbing, and their headlamps reflect that heritage. The Actik Core is the lightest option in our roundup at 2.6oz and the CORE rechargeable battery system also accepts 3xAAA backup. At $65 it is mid-range. What it gives up versus the BioLite is the moisture sensor and IPX4 versus IPX8 waterproofing compared to the Black Diamond. But for backpacking where every ounce matters, 2.6oz is hard to argue with.

Field Notes

Used the Actik Core primarily for backpacking trips where every ounce matters. The 2.6oz weight is noticeable versus the Black Diamond over a long week. My one frustration was the Micro-USB connector — I carry only USB-C cables and had to track down a Micro-USB cable specifically for the Petzl.

Who This Is For

The Petzl Actik Core ranks #3 of 4 in this category and is a solid pick with some tradeoffs worth knowing. It is well-suited for hikers and campers who want Petzl has made headlamps and climbing gear in France since 1975. The Actik Core is their most popular multi-sport headlamp — 450 lumens, 2.6oz, hybrid battery system, and it performs best when used for the purpose it was designed around.

I review gear the way most people actually use it — weekend trips in the mid-Atlantic, day hikes on the AT, car camping in the Smokies and down at the Outer Banks. Not expedition use, not extreme conditions. Normal outdoor life for normal people, and occasionally with kids along who provide their own kind of honest product feedback.
