Lodge Sportsman Grill Review (2026)

Cast iron American heritage at $119 — made in Tennessee since 1896

Sometimes the old answer is still the right answer. The Lodge Sportsman is a cast iron grill that has been largely unchanged for decades. It sears better than anything else here because cast iron holds and distributes heat the way thin stainless cannot. At $119 it is the cheapest option in this roundup and genuinely American-made. The tradeoff is weight and simplicity — no tech, no monitoring, just fire and food. If you want the best sear and do not mind the weight, this is your grill.

Field Notes

Used at the Outer Banks more times than I can count. A bag of lump charcoal and the Lodge is a perfect combination. The cast iron grates get ripping hot and you get proper grill marks on a steak that thinner grates cannot deliver. The maintenance — wipe down with oil after every use — takes two minutes and becomes automatic.

Who This Is For

The Lodge Sportsman Grill ranks #4 of 4 in this category and is a worthwhile option for the right buyer. It is well-suited for hikers and campers who want Lodge has been making cast iron in South Pittsburg, Tennessee since 1896. The Sportsman is a classic charcoal hibachi-style portable grill that will outlast every other piece of gear you own, and it performs best when used for the purpose it was designed around.

I review gear the way most people actually use it — weekend trips in the mid-Atlantic, day hikes on the AT, car camping in the Smokies and down at the Outer Banks. Not expedition use, not extreme conditions. Normal outdoor life for normal people, and occasionally with kids along who provide their own kind of honest product feedback.

Common Questions

Does cast iron rust?
It can if left wet. After every use, dry it completely and wipe with a thin coat of oil. Two minutes, every time.
How does cast iron compare to stainless for cooking?
Cast iron retains heat better and distributes it more evenly — better searing and fewer hot spots. For a portable grill this size, that difference is real and noticeable.
Is Lodge still made in the USA?
Yes — Lodge Manufacturing has been in South Pittsburg, Tennessee since 1896.
