Garmin inReach Mini 2 Review (2026)

3.5oz, two-way Iridium messaging, live tracking — the standard for backcountry safety

★★★★★
9.4/10
Reviewed by William • Updated May 2026 $350

The Garmin inReach Mini 2 is a strong option. At 3.5oz it is small enough to clip to a shoulder strap and forget. Two-way messaging via the Iridium satellite network works anywhere with sky view — 40 miles from the nearest cell tower in the Virginia highlands,, on the Outer Banks during a storm. Family members can see exactly where the hiker is on the live tracking map if a return time is missed. Few other pieces of gear change how confidently a hiker can travel solo as much as a reliable satellite communicator.

What Sets It Apart

Garmin recommends registering and performing a test SOS with their GEOS response center before depending on the unit in the field. The GEOS monitoring center is reported to contact a hiker's emergency contact within roughly 90 seconds of SOS activation. The subscription pays for itself in peace of mind on the first trip where you lose cell signal.

Two-way messaging, live tracking, global SOS — 3.5oz of genuine peace of mind in the backcountry

Who This Is For

The Garmin inReach Mini 2 is right for: solo hikers on remote trails, anyone doing AT sections with long stretches of no cell signal, hikers with family who worry, and anyone going into genuinely remote terrain. At $15/month for the Safety plan, it is the cheapest life insurance available.

Common Questions

Does the Garmin inReach Mini 2 require a subscription?
Yes — a monthly subscription is required for satellite messaging and tracking. Plans range from $15/month (Safety, SOS + 10 messages) to $65/month (Expedition, unlimited messages + tracking). Annual plans save about 20%. The device can be paused between seasons.
How far does the Garmin inReach Mini 2 range?
Anywhere with a clear view of the sky — the Iridium satellite network provides 100% global polar coverage. The Mini 2 works in the middle of the ocean, on Mount Everest, and in the Virginia highlands. Coverage gaps occur in deep canyons or dense overhead cover.
Can I text from the Garmin inReach Mini 2?
Yes — two-way text messaging is the core feature. Messages up to 160 characters can be sent and received via Iridium. The recipient can reply from any phone or email. You can also send pre-set messages (arriving at camp, leaving in morning) with a single button press.
What happens when I press SOS on inReach?
Pressing SOS triggers a connection to Garmin's GEOS emergency monitoring center, which confirms your location, contacts your emergency contacts, and coordinates with local search and rescue. The process is immediate and continues until rescue or SOS is cancelled.
