Garmin inReach Messenger
#5 — Best Lightweight / Phone-Dependent

Garmin inReach Messenger Review (2026)

1.5oz, no screen by design, same Iridium network as Mini 2 — the inReach for minimalists

★★★★★
9.0/10
Reviewed by William • Updated May 2026 $300

The Garmin inReach Messenger answers a question that the Mini 2 does not: what if you want the full Iridium two-way messaging network at less than half the weight? At 1.5oz versus the Mini 2's 3.5oz, the Messenger is designed to pair with your phone for all display and typing functions. You give up standalone operation and the Mini 2's screen; you gain a device that almost disappears in your pack. For hikers who always carry their phone on trail and want inReach capability without the weight and bulk, this is the right tool.

What I Liked

  • 1.5oz — less than half the Mini 2 weight, lightest inReach device available
  • Full Iridium satellite network — same global coverage as inReach Mini 2
  • Two-way messaging, SOS, and tracking via Garmin Messenger app
  • Up to 28 days battery in tracking mode, 3 days messaging
  • $300 — $50 less than inReach Mini 2 at launch
  • Compatible with all inReach subscription plans

Limitations

  • Requires a charged smartphone to send/receive messages — standalone SOS only without phone
  • No screen — cannot read messages if phone battery is dead
  • Still requires a paid subscription (same plans as Mini 2)
  • USB-C charging only (no solar compatibility unlike some panels)
  • App interface adds one more step vs standalone device

Field Notes

Tested on a 5-day AT section in Virginia alongside the inReach Mini 2. The 1.5oz weight difference is real — the Messenger clips to a pack strap and genuinely disappears. The phone dependency is the critical trade-off: three times over five days my phone battery needed management to keep the Messenger functional. I kept a small power bank as backup. For hikers who are already disciplined about phone battery management and want the lightest possible Iridium-capable device, this is excellent. For anyone who wants independence from their phone in an emergency: the Mini 2.

At 1.5oz, same Iridium network, lower price — the inReach for hikers who always have their phone

Who This Is For

The Garmin inReach Messenger is right for: ultralight hikers who always carry their phone, AT section hikers who want Iridium coverage at minimum weight, and anyone for whom the Mini 2 feels too bulky.

Common Questions

Garmin inReach Messenger vs Mini 2 — which should I buy?
inReach Mini 2 (9.4/10, $350): standalone screen and keyboard, works without a phone, slightly heavier at 3.5oz. inReach Messenger (9.0/10, $300): 1.5oz, requires phone for messaging, same Iridium network. If you want phone independence: Mini 2. If you always have your phone and want minimum weight: Messenger.
Does the Garmin inReach Messenger work without a phone?
For SOS only: yes — the physical SOS button works standalone and triggers a rescue coordination response through GEOS. For two-way messaging and tracking: you need the Garmin Messenger app on a paired smartphone. It does not have a screen or keyboard for standalone operation.
What subscription plan does the Garmin inReach Messenger require?
The same Garmin inReach subscription plans as the Mini 2: Safety ($14.99/mo, SOS + 10 messages), Recreation ($34.99/mo), or Expedition ($64.99/mo). Annual plans are cheaper. You can activate/suspend monthly. All plans include unlimited SOS regardless of tier.
