Enlightened Equipment Revelation 20°F Quilt Review (2026)

18oz for a 20°F rating, 850 fill power, custom-made in Minnesota — the quilt most AT thru-hikers end up using

The Enlightened Equipment Revelation is what happens when you remove the insulation you compress against a sleeping pad — the 30-40% of bag weight that contributes nothing to warmth — and redirect it to where it matters. At 18oz for a 20°F quilt rated in real conditions (not optimistic lab ratings), the Revelation is lighter than nearly every sleeping bag at this temperature rating. I have used mine for four seasons of Virginia and Maryland AT sections and it is the single gear item I would least want to replace.

What I Liked

  • 18oz for a genuine 20°F comfort rating — lighter than nearly all equivalent bags
  • 850 fill power down — compresses small, lofts quickly
  • Custom-made in Winona, Minnesota — build quality is exceptional
  • Footbox design prevents cold spots at feet
  • Pad attachment loops keep quilt from shifting on restless nights
  • Multiple fill power and temperature rating options

Limitations

  • $350 — premium price
  • Custom order — 2-4 week lead time
  • Requires technique — restless sleepers may experience draft until adjusted
  • No hood — add down hood or hat for very cold nights

Field Notes

Four seasons of AT overnights from April to November. The Revelation handles Virginia May nights (45-55°F) with comfort and Maryland October nights (28-35°F) with a fleece hat and base layers. The custom footbox eliminates the cold feet problem common with flat quilts. Build quality from Enlightened Equipment is the best of any soft goods I have purchased — seams, stitching, and down distribution are flawless after dozens of nights.

18oz for a real 20°F rating, made in Minnesota, the quilt the AT thru-hiking community converged on

Who This Is For

The Enlightened Equipment Revelation is right for: AT section hikers and thru-hikers who have committed to quilts over sleeping bags, anyone wanting a premium US-made 20°F down quilt, and hikers who sleep still enough to benefit from quilt weight savings.

Common Questions

Is the Enlightened Equipment Revelation warm enough for the AT?
The 20°F Revelation covers AT 3-season hiking in Virginia and Maryland with margin. For the Whites in September or high Smokies ridges: use the 10°F version. The 20°F is the most versatile choice for mid-Atlantic section hikers.
How long is the lead time for Enlightened Equipment quilts?
Custom quilts typically ship in 2-4 weeks. During peak season (January-March when thru-hikers are outfitting), lead times can extend to 6-8 weeks. Order early. The wait is worth it.
