Counter Assault Bear Keg
#4 — Best Budget Hard Canister

Counter Assault Bear Keg Review (2026)

$75, IGBC certified — the most affordable hard bear canister that meets all requirements

★★★★★
8.3/10
Reviewed by William • May 2026$75

The Counter Assault Bear Keg is the most affordable IGBC certified hard canister tested at $75 — $5 less than the BearVault BV500 for slightly less capacity (615 vs 700 cu in) and slightly more weight (42 vs 39oz). For budget-conscious AT hikers who need a hard canister in the Smokies or other required areas, it gets the job done without overpaying. The lid is the weakest point — harder to operate than the BearVault or Lighter1.

Field Notes

Borrowed from a Smokies rental program on a solo trip. The lid was noticeably harder to operate than my own Lighter1 but functional. The capacity held 4 days of food with efficient packing. For a one-time rental or a hiker on a tight budget who needs to meet GSMNP requirements, it accomplishes the goal.

Who This Is For

The Counter Assault Bear Keg is right for: hikers on a strict budget who need IGBC certification for GSMNP, occasional users who rent or borrow canisters infrequently, and AT section hikers doing one Smokies trip who cannot justify $80-100.

Common Questions

Is Counter Assault Bear Keg allowed in GSMNP?
Yes — the Counter Assault Bear Keg is IGBC certified and accepted in Great Smoky Mountains National Park and all other areas requiring hard-sided bear canisters.
How does the Counter Assault lid compare to BearVault?
Both use a push-and-turn mechanism, but the Counter Assault lid requires more downward pressure and is harder to operate with cold or wet hands. The BearVault lid is more refined. The Lighter1 coin-slot mechanism is easiest of all three.
How much food fits in the Counter Assault Bear Keg?
615 cubic inches holds approximately 4-5 days of food for one person with efficient packing — slightly less than the BearVault BV500 (700 cu in). For 5+ day trips, consider the BearVault for the additional 85 cu in.
Where can I rent a bear canister?
Many AT-adjacent outfitters and national park visitor centers rent bear canisters for $3-7/day. In Gatlinburg TN near GSMNP, several outfitters rent canisters. Renting is practical for infrequent users who cannot justify the purchase cost.
