Black Diamond Distance FLZ Carbon

The Distance FLZ solves a specific problem: you want poles available for descents but don't want to carry them in hand the whole day. The Z-fold system collapses to 13 inches and straps to a pack side pocket or slides into most hydration bladder sleeves. At 8.7 oz for the pair it's heavier than fixed-length carbon but lighter than most adjustable poles. The FlickLock Pro adjustment system is reliable and fast to operate with gloves. I bring these on days where I know the terrain is mixed — easy approach, technical descent.

Z-fold vs. telescoping

Z-fold poles (also called three-section fold) collapse like tent poles by folding in thirds. They deploy fast — one shake and a flip of the FlickLock. Telescoping poles screw or lever-lock at two sections and pack down to roughly 24–27 inches. The Z-fold at 13 inches is dramatically more packable than a telescoping pole.

The tradeoff is rigidity. Three-section fold poles flex slightly more than a single fixed-length carbon shaft, especially under heavy load. In practice, the difference is minor for normal trail use. For hard-terrain technical hiking with poles under significant load, fixed-length carbon is stiffer.

"Thirteen-inch collapsed length. They go in a pack pocket and come out when the descent starts. That's the use case they nail."

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Z-fold and telescoping trekking poles?
Z-fold poles fold in thirds like tent poles and collapse very compact. Telescoping poles screw or lever-lock at one or two sections and are more adjustable but pack less small. Z-fold deploys faster; telescoping is more adjustable on the fly.
Are the BD Distance FLZ good for hiking or just trail running?
Both. They were designed with trail runners in mind but work well for any hiker who wants poles available for sections rather than all-day use. The compact collapsed size is the advantage in either case.
How long is the BD Distance FLZ warranty?
Three years against manufacturing defects. Not as strong as the lifetime warranties on some smaller brands, but Black Diamond's warranty service is responsive.
