BioLite BaseCamp Fire Pit
#3 — Best Tech-Forward Grill

BioLite BaseCamp Fire Pit Review (2026)

Wood-burning with a built-in fan for precision combustion — and it charges your devices

★★★★☆
8.9/10
Reviewed by William • Updated April 2026$249

BioLite makes genuinely interesting gear. The BaseCamp burns wood or pellets with a thermoelectric generator that powers a fan (improving combustion) and a USB charging port. You can charge your phone while grilling over wood. At $249 it is the most expensive grill here. For car campers who want to ditch fuel canisters entirely and always have access to found wood, it makes a compelling case. For people who just want to cook burgers efficiently, it is more than you need.

Field Notes

The BioLite shone on a two-night car camp where we were not near a propane source. We cooked every meal over it. The phone charging came in handy when we went longer than planned. One frustration was a rainy afternoon when everything was damp — the grill struggled and required more babysitting than I wanted.

Who This Is For

The BioLite BaseCamp Fire Pit ranks #3 of 4 in this category and is a solid pick with some tradeoffs worth knowing. It is well-suited for hikers and campers who want BioLite put a battery, a fan, and a USB port in a wood-burning fire grill. The BaseCamp creates precision temperature control from a wood fire and generates enough electricity to meaningfully charge your phone, and it performs best when used for the purpose it was designed around.

I review gear the way most people actually use it — weekend trips in the mid-Atlantic, day hikes on the AT, car camping in the Smokies and down at the Outer Banks. Not expedition use, not extreme conditions. Normal outdoor life for normal people, and occasionally with kids along who provide their own kind of honest product feedback.

Common Questions

Can the BaseCamp actually charge a phone?
Yes — it charged an iPhone from 40% to full during a 45-minute cooking session. Not fast charging, but steady and useful.
What fuel does it use?
Wood sticks or wood pellets. Pellets burn more consistently and are easier to control for new users.
Is BioLite a good company?
Yes — genuine social mission funding clean cooking in developing countries, and real customer service.
