How to Pick a Sleeping Bag
Bad sleep ruins camping. The right bag is the single most impactful piece of gear for comfort, and most people either overspend on warmth they do not need or underspend and freeze.
Temperature rating: Buy colder than you think
EN/ISO temperature ratings are standardized but measured on an average male sleeper. If you sleep cold, add 10-15 degrees of buffer. Buy the bag rated lower than your coldest expected temperature.
Down vs. synthetic
Down is significantly lighter and more compressible than synthetic at the same warmth rating but loses insulation when wet. Synthetic stays warmer when damp. For three-season Appalachian hiking where humidity is real, treated down gives you most of the compressibility with better wet resistance.
Bags vs. quilts
Sleeping quilts remove the back panel of a sleeping bag, which gets compressed by your body weight and provides no insulation anyway. They are lighter and more versatile. They take adjustment. For most campers a traditional bag is simpler. For hikers who have dialed in their kit, a quilt is hard to beat on weight.
