How to Choose a Camping Hammock

The hammock question is not which one to buy — it is whether a hammock fits your camping style. Hammocks require two suitable trees roughly 12–15 feet apart. Perfect for the Appalachians. Useless at Assateague Island or above treeline. If trees are reliable at your destinations, a hammock is genuinely a better sleep system for solo campers in warm weather.

Weight and suspension

The ENO DoubleNest at 19oz is the car camping standard. The Grand Trunk Ultralight at 14oz is the backpacking option. The suspension straps matter as much as the hammock — use straps at least 1 inch wide to protect tree bark. Never hang with rope or cord.

Bug nets and tarps

The Kammock Roo includes an integrated bug net. For ENO hammocks, add a separate clip-on net for bug season. Any 8×10 silnylon tarp rigged above the hammock handles rain.

Frequently Asked Questions

What trees can I hang a hammock from?
Use healthy hardwood trees at least 8 inches in diameter — oak, beech, maple. Avoid dead trees, soft wood near the coast, and any tree under 6 inches. On mid-Atlantic AT sections, suitable trees are almost universally available.
Do I need a rain tarp with a camping hammock?
Yes for any trip where rain is possible. A silnylon tarp (8×10 ft) rigged above the hammock covers most rain. The Kammock Roo has built-in attachment points for a fly. ENO hammocks work with any standard tarp setup.
Are hammocks colder than tents?
Yes — air circulates underneath you. For camping below 50°F, use an underquilt beneath the hammock to insulate the bottom. Above 60°F, a standard sleeping bag on top is comfortable. Summer hammock camping in Virginia and Maryland is excellent without an underquilt.
Can two people sleep in one camping hammock?
Only if the hammock is rated for two. The ENO DoubleNest is rated for two people (400 lbs) but is cramped for sleeping — better as a lounge hammock. For comfortable sleep, separate hammocks are the right call.
