Do I need maps on a watch?
Most hikers do not — a phone with a mapping app has a far better screen for reading topography. Watch maps matter when you cannot get a phone out, such as in bad weather or while moving fast.
Is Instinct solar genuinely unlimited?
In smartwatch mode with several hours of daily sun exposure, yes. GPS tracking still drains faster than solar replaces, and tree cover and winter light reduce harvesting substantially.
Which is better for a thru-hike?
The Instinct, for battery. Charging opportunities on a long trail are scarce and a Fenix becomes another device competing for a limited power bank.
