Garmin Instinct 2X Solar
#4 — Best Unlimited-Battery GPS Watch

Garmin Instinct 2X Solar Review (2026)

Solar charging that can make GPS battery life effectively unlimited

★★★★★
9.1/10
Reviewed by William • Updated August 2026 $450

The 2X is the Instinct grown up: a larger 50mm case with a bigger solar panel, which is the whole point. With enough daily sun exposure, battery life in smartwatch mode is effectively unlimited, and even in GPS tracking mode solar meaningfully extends it. Garmin also added a genuinely bright built-in LED flashlight, which sounds like a gimmick and turns out to be one of the most-used features on night hikes and in tents. The case is large, and the monochrome display remains basic against AMOLED competitors.

  • Monochrome display looks dated next to AMOLED
  • $450
  • No topographic mapping — breadcrumb navigation only

What Sets It Apart

The flashlight is the sleeper feature. Having a light on your wrist means you can find things in a tent, check a map, or handle a middle-of-the-night trip outside without locating a headlamp. Several people who bought this for the battery report the flashlight is what they would miss.

Common Questions

Is solar charging genuinely useful or marketing?
On the 2X it is genuinely useful because the panel is larger. Hiking in open terrain for several hours a day can offset or exceed daily drain.
Instinct 2X or Fenix 7?
The Fenix adds full topographic mapping and a more refined build. The Instinct 2X wins on battery and costs less.
