Bottom line: The Drifter is remarkable for $30 and the Elementum is remarkable full stop. Better steel, smoother bearings, and a fit and finish that reads far above $45. Unless the extra $15 genuinely matters, buy the Elementum.

Will D2 rust?
It is semi-stainless — more corrosion resistant than carbon steel and less than a true stainless. Wipe it dry after wet use and it is fine.
Is 8Cr13MoV bad steel?
It is entry-level. It sharpens in seconds on almost any stone and loses its edge quickly. For a $30 knife that is a reasonable trade.
Which is better for a first quality knife?
The Elementum. It shows what good action and finish feel like, which is hard to appreciate until you have handled it.
