Hyperlite Mountain Gear Daybreak 17
#12 — Best Ultralight Waterproof Daypack

Hyperlite Mountain Gear Daybreak 17 Review (2026)

Dyneema Composite Fabric at 15oz, and rain simply does not matter

★★★★★
8.3/10
Reviewed by William • Updated August 2026 $199

Dyneema Composite Fabric is the reason to buy this. At 15oz it is nearly as light as the Flash 22 while being dramatically more tear-resistant and effectively waterproof — rain stops being something you plan around. The pack itself is deliberately simple: a roll-top main compartment, a front stretch pocket, and minimal organization. At $199 for 17 liters the value case rests entirely on whether the fabric properties matter for how you hike.

What Sets It Apart

The waterproofing changes trip planning more than the weight does. On a rainy day hike with a normal pack you either carry a raincover or line the pack with a trash bag; with this you close the roll-top and stop thinking about it. DCF also does not absorb water, so the pack does not gain a pound in a downpour the way nylon does.

Common Questions

Is DCF really waterproof?
The fabric is, and HMG tapes the seams. The roll-top closure is highly water resistant rather than submersible, so it handles rain but is not a dry bag.
Does DCF wear out?
It abrades rather than tearing, and it creases permanently, which looks worse than it performs. Tear strength stays high for years.
