Why it works here. Permethrin on clothing is the strongest single measure available and it is the one most people skip because it happens at home rather than on trail. Treated trousers, socks, and gaiters kill ticks on contact rather than deterring them, and the treatment survives several washes.
What to watch out for. It is a clothing treatment only — never apply it to skin. It is toxic to cats while wet, so treat garments away from pets and let them dry fully. It also must be done days before the trip, not at the trailhead.

Sawyer Premium Picaridin 20% — $10
Why it works here. Picaridin at 20% handles mosquitoes, black flies, and ticks about as well as similar-strength DEET without dissolving plastics. In a pack full of synthetic gear, sunglasses, dry bags, and watch bezels, that difference is genuinely practical rather than academic.
What to watch out for. Reapply per the label, particularly after sweating heavily. It goes on exposed skin only — the clothing treatment does the rest of the work.

Why it works here. The solid inner is the reason this is here rather than a mesh-only shelter. Full sealed netting keeps out no-see-ums that pass through standard mesh, and the large offset vestibule gives you somewhere to cook and change without opening the inner and letting a cloud in.
What to watch out for. Solid inner reduces ventilation and increases condensation in humid bug season. Pitch where there is some airflow and expect to wipe the interior in the morning.

Why it works here. For hammock campers, an integrated bug net removes the worst part of summer hammock camping. A separate net over a hammock is fiddly and leaves gaps; a built-in one seals properly and packs as a single item.
What to watch out for. Integrated means you carry the net whether you need it or not. It also does nothing for insects biting through the fabric where your body compresses it against the hammock — a pad or underquilt fixes that.

What to watch out for. It does not protect the ears or the area around the eyes, which is exactly where black flies go. In genuinely severe conditions a proper head net is the only answer.

A proven 0.1 micron filter handles the protozoa those sources carry, and it threads onto standard bottles so you can filter and keep walking rather than lingering at the water.
What to watch out for. Backflush it regularly — murky standing water clogs filters faster than a mountain stream does. Do not linger at the source: filter into a bottle and move away before drinking.
