R-value is the standard measure of a sleeping pad's thermal resistance, and understanding it prevents the common mistake of trusting a warm sleeping bag alone to keep you comfortable overnight.

    R-value quantifies a material's resistance to heat flow — higher numbers mean better insulation against the cold ground beneath you, using a standardized testing method most major manufacturers now follow (ASTM F3340).
