The most common glove mistake is buying insulation for a problem that is actually about output. Hands are warmed by blood flow from a warm core, so a hiker working hard has warm hands in thin gloves and cold hands the moment they stop — regardless of how much insulation is on them.

What a liner actually does
A liner traps a thin layer of still air and blocks evaporative cooling. That is enough for 35-50°F while moving. Because it is thin it also dries fast, layers under a shell without bunching, and leaves you dexterous enough to use a phone or a buckle.

What insulation adds
Loft. An insulated glove holds a thick layer of still air, which is what you need when your body is not producing surplus heat — at breaks, in camp, at a summit, or when the temperature drops below your metabolic ability to compensate.

The output test
If you are still warm enough to unzip your jacket, your hands do not need insulation. If you have zipped up and put your hood on, they do. Hand temperature tracks core surplus more closely than air temperature, which is why the same glove feels different on two identical days.

Where each fails
Liners fail in wind and at rest. Insulated gloves fail on climbs, where they trap sweat that later freezes and makes you colder than a thin glove would have. Carrying both is a genuine answer, not a hedge.
