Establish your real temperature range
Write down the coldest condition you actually hike in, not the coldest you can imagine. For most mid-Atlantic and Appalachian hikers that is 20-25°F with wind, not 0°F. Buying for a temperature you rarely see means carrying a glove that is too warm the other forty weekends of the year.

Match the glove to your output level
Hands generate very little heat of their own — they are warmed by blood flow from a warm core. A hiker working hard uphill has warm hands in thin gloves. The same hiker standing at an overlook for ten minutes needs substantially more insulation. If your hiking is high-output, buy thinner than the temperature chart suggests and carry a warmer layer for stops.

Decide how much wet weather you face
This is the question that separates a $40 glove from a $200 one. Dry cold is easy — fleece and softshell handle it. Cold rain at 35°F defeats almost everything that is not genuinely waterproof. If your region delivers cold rain regularly, budget for a waterproof shell or a waterproof insulated glove and stop looking at fleece.

Set your dexterity requirement
List the tasks you must do without removing gloves: pole straps, zippers, a phone, a stove valve, a camera, a rope. The more of those there are, the more you should favor a five-finger glove over a mitten, and a thinner glove over a thicker one. If the list is short, mittens buy you a large amount of warmth for free.

Choose a system or a single glove
A liner plus a waterproof shell covers a wider temperature range than any single glove, dries faster, and lets you work bare-fingered under the shell. A single insulated glove is simpler, warmer per ounce, and has exactly one setting.
