A mitten and a glove with identical insulation do not perform identically. Fingers in a shared chamber warm each other and expose less total surface area; fingers in separate chambers each lose heat independently. The practical gap is large — roughly 15-20°F for comparable construction.

Why mittens are warmer
Two reasons. Surface area: five separate fabric tubes radiate more heat than one chamber. And shared warmth: fingers touching each other exchange heat instead of each fighting the cold alone. Neither is a small effect.

What you give up
Fine motor control. Pole straps become awkward, zippers become a two-hand operation, and a phone is effectively impossible. For hiking with poles on a broken trail, this ranges from mildly annoying to genuinely unsafe.

The removable-liner compromise
Mitts like the Black Diamond Mercury use a removable fleece liner. You pull the shell off for a task, keep the liner on so bare skin never touches metal at 10°F, then re-shell to rewarm. This recovers most of what mitten geometry costs you.

Who should default to mittens
Anyone with Raynaud's or chronically cold hands, winter campers who are stationary for long periods, and hikers whose fingers go numb in gloves that work fine for their partners. If gloves have repeatedly failed you, the answer is usually geometry rather than more insulation.
