Premium lens lines all make a similar claim: that they enhance contrast rather than simply darkening the world. The underlying idea is real and the marketing is louder than the effect. Understanding the mechanism tells you when the premium is worth paying and when a $60 lens does the same job.

    The mechanism: selective wavelength filtering

    Ordinary tinted lenses dim all wavelengths roughly evenly. Contrast lenses filter narrow bands where colour signals overlap in the eye, which increases the perceived separation between adjacent colours. The effect is genuine and subtle — rock against dirt, or a trail line against undergrowth, becomes slightly easier to distinguish.
