Bottom line: The Companion is the best $20 knife made and the Kansbol fixes its one real weakness. The tapered spine — thick at the base for carving, thin at the tip for slicing — makes the Kansbol noticeably better at food prep without giving up wood work. Worth $25 if you cook at camp.

Can either be used for batoning?

No. Both are partial tang — the tang does not run the full handle length. Buy the Garberg if batoning matters.

Carbon or stainless Companion?

Stainless for most people — no rust care and nearly the same performance. Carbon takes a slightly finer edge and demands drying and oiling.
