Modern specialty instant is the reason many thru-hikers carry no coffee gear at all. Alpine Start dissolves completely, including in cold water, and tastes like coffee rather than like the instant granules of twenty years ago. Weight per serving is negligible, there is no cleanup, and there is nothing to break or lose. It will not match a fresh pour-over and it costs more per cup than ground coffee, but on a long trail those are minor considerations against carrying zero gear.
