Short day hikes tempt people into carrying nothing, and the ones that go wrong go wrong because of exactly that. This kit is the smallest set that still covers water, light, weather, and a way to call for help, and it comes to well under two pounds total.

Why Each Piece Is Here
- 1
REI Co-op Flash 22 — $60
Why it works here. Thirteen ounces, twenty-two litres, and $60. The removable foam back panel pulls out as a sit pad at a viewpoint, which is the detail that earns it loyalty. For a load this light, a frame is unnecessary and the weight saving is the point.
What to watch out for. Frameless means it is uncomfortable above about 15lb — fine here, limiting if you later load it up. The thin fabric shows wear on rock, so it is a trail pack rather than a scrambling one.

GSI Outdoors Ultralight Java Drip — $10
Why it works here. Nothing here is about coffee, but at 0.4oz this folds flat into a pocket and turns a summit stop into something worth sitting down for. It is the cheapest morale item available per gram, and on a short hike morale is most of the point.
What to watch out for. The mesh filter passes fines and the wet grounds must be knocked into a bag and packed out. Carry a small zip bag or skip it.

Aquamira Water Treatment Drops — $15
Why it works here. Three ounces that treat thirty gallons, with nothing to clog, freeze, or break. On a short hike you are carrying a bottle rather than filtering constantly, and drops mean an unplanned extension does not become a water problem.
What to watch out for. Fifteen to thirty minutes of wait, so treat at the source rather than when thirsty. Does nothing for sediment — pre-filter cloudy water through a bandana.

Petzl Bindi — $40
Why it works here. 1.2oz. The single most common way a day hike becomes an incident is running out of daylight, and a headlamp is the item that turns that from serious into merely late. There is no defensible argument for leaving 1.2oz behind.
What to watch out for. Short runtime at high output. It is enough to walk out on, not enough for hours of night hiking. Charge it before every trip regardless of how short the walk is.

Montbell Tachyon Wind Jacket — $100
Why it works here. Three ounces that handles the temperature drop when you stop moving or reach an exposed section. Wind is what turns a comfortable 50°F into an uncomfortable one, and this packs into its own pocket and disappears in a pack.
What to watch out for. Not waterproof — it sheds a shower and wets through in real rain. If rain is forecast, this is the wrong layer and you want a proper shell.

Leatherman Micra — $35
Why it works here. 1.8oz, and the scissors and tweezers do more real work than a blade would. Splinters, ticks, a bandage that needs cutting, a loose thread on a strap — these are the actual small problems a day hike produces.
What to watch out for. Everything is small and light-duty. It is a first aid and small-task tool, not a camp knife. It also has a blade, so it goes in checked luggage if you fly.

goodr OG — $25
Why it works here. Twenty-five dollars and 0.9oz with full UV blocking and a grip that holds through a sweaty climb. Eye protection is not optional on exposed trail, and at this price losing them on a scramble is a shrug rather than a problem.
What to watch out for. Basic optical quality compared with premium lenses, and no polarization on the base model. For a short hike that is an entirely reasonable trade.

Black Diamond Midweight Screentap Fleece — $40
Why it works here. 2.4oz that makes a cold morning start comfortable and keeps your hands working for zips, poles, and a phone. On a short hike the temptation is to skip gloves entirely, and cold hands are what cuts an otherwise good morning short.
What to watch out for. Not windproof and not water resistant. Above about 15mph wind they lose ground fast, so they suit shoulder-season mornings rather than genuine cold.
