What each method does and doesn't remove
Most squeeze filters remove bacteria and protozoa effectively but may not reliably remove viruses (a bigger concern internationally than in the US backcountry). Chemical treatment with chlorine dioxide addresses viruses that some filters miss, but doesn't improve water clarity or remove sediment.

Why many thru-hikers carry both
A primary filter for speed and taste, plus chemical drops as backup in case the filter clogs or freezes, is a common and sensible redundancy strategy — the combined weight is still low, and it protects against the specific failure mode of each method.
