Satellite messaging works differently from cellular texting — different delays, different confirmation methods, and different best practices. Here's what to know before the first trip.
Setting Up Before Departure
Create preset messages. Preset messages (stored in the device or app before the trip) allow sending common check-in phrases with one button press rather than composing in the field. Set up "At camp, all fine," "Running late," "Call rescue in 24h if no contact," and a custom location-update template before departure.
Add contacts. Import the phone numbers and email addresses of contacts who will receive messages. Most apps sync contacts from the phone's address book. Add at least one primary emergency contact and one backup.
Sending a Message
For phone-dependent devices (Messenger, Bivy Stick, Somewear): open the app, compose the message, and send. The device transmits via Bluetooth to the satellite modem. For standalone devices (Mini 2, Explorer+): use the device's directional pad and on-screen keyboard, or the paired app for faster composition.
Receiving Replies
Replies arrive when the device has satellite coverage and the message window opens. Most devices check for incoming messages every 60-90 seconds while powered on. If a contact replies via SMS or email, the reply appears as an incoming satellite message on the device within 1-5 minutes typically.
