Manufacturer ice retention claims assume a pre-chilled cooler packed full of block ice and rarely opened. Most people do none of those things and then blame the cooler. Technique routinely doubles real-world performance.

Pre-chill the cooler the night before
A warm cooler absorbs a large amount of your ice just cooling its own walls. Put a sacrificial bag of ice inside the night before and dump it before packing. On a rotomolded cooler this single step can add a full day of retention.

Use block ice as the base and cubes to fill
Block ice melts far more slowly because it has less surface area per unit mass. Use blocks at the bottom for longevity and cubed ice packed around items to fill air gaps. Air is the enemy — every void is warm space your ice must cool.

Aim for two parts ice to one part contents
This is the ratio manufacturer claims are based on. Less ice than this and retention drops sharply. If that seems like a lot of ice, the cooler is too big for the trip.

Pack in reverse order of use
Last-day food at the bottom, first-day food and drinks on top. Every time you dig through the cooler you dump cold air and let warm air in, so the goal is grabbing what you need without excavating.

Keep it closed, shaded, and drained thoughtfully
Every opening costs cold. Keep drinks in a separate small cooler so the main one stays shut. Keep the cooler in shade and, in a vehicle, out of direct sun. Leave meltwater in until you need the space — cold water insulates far better than the air that replaces it.
