A folding knife has a hinge, and a hinge is both its advantage and every one of its weaknesses. Understanding what the pivot costs you makes the choice straightforward for most camping situations.
- 1
Strength: fixed blade, decisively
A fixed blade is one piece of steel running through the handle. There is no lock to fail, no pivot to loosen, and no orientation in which the blade can close on your fingers. For batoning, prying, or any load that is not straight cutting, this is not close.
- 2
Cleaning: fixed blade, and it matters more than people think
A folder used for cheese, salami, or anything greasy collects material inside the pivot and the handle channel. It does not fully rinse out without disassembly, and at a campsite you are not disassembling a knife. A fixed blade rinses clean in ten seconds. If your knife touches food, this alone is a strong argument.
- 3
Carry: folder, usually
A folder rides in a pocket unnoticed. A fixed blade needs a sheath on a belt or pack strap, which is bulkier and reads differently in a parking lot or a diner on the way home. For anything beyond the trailhead, a folder is simpler socially and legally.

Weight: it depends more than you would expect
A Morakniv Eldris is 2.6oz with its sheath, lighter than many folders. A Ka-Bar BK2 is 16oz. Fixed blades span a huge range, so weight is not automatically an argument for folders.

The practical answer for most campers
Carry both, because they are cheap and they do different jobs. A small fixed blade for food and fire work at camp, plus a folder or multi-tool in a pocket for everything else, covers the ground for well under $100 and about 6 ounces.
