Seiko 5 Sports SRPD Review (2026)

A mechanical movement that runs on your arm, with no battery to die

★★★★★
8.5/10
Reviewed by William • Updated August 2026 $275

An automatic watch is wound by the motion of your arm, so it needs no battery and no charging — it simply runs as long as you wear it. For long trips that is a real advantage, and mechanical movements are also serviceable indefinitely rather than disposable. The Seiko 5 is the traditional entry point: the 4R36 movement hacks and hand-winds, the case is 100m water resistant, and the whole thing costs $275. Accuracy is the trade — expect roughly 15-30 seconds of drift per day, which is fine for hiking and poor by quartz standards.

What Sets It Apart

The appeal is independence from the charging economy. Everything else in a modern pack needs power at some point, and a mechanical watch simply does not. It also keeps working in cold that degrades lithium batteries, which is a small but real advantage on winter trips.

Common Questions

Will it stop if I take it off overnight?
After about 41 hours, yes. Wearing it daily keeps it running, or hand-wind it in the morning.
Is 15-30 seconds a day acceptable?
For hiking, absolutely. Reset against your phone weekly and it never matters.
