The three metals used for camp pots trade the same three properties against each other: weight, how evenly they conduct heat, and how much abuse they take. Which one is right depends almost entirely on whether you boil water or actually cook.

    Titanium: lightest, worst at cooking

    Titanium is roughly 40% lighter than aluminium at equal strength, which is why it dominates ultralight kits. It also conducts heat poorly, creating hotspots directly above the flame. Boiling water is fine; anything that can scorch — oatmeal, sauces, anything with sugar — burns in the hotspot while the rest of the pot stays cool.

    Aluminium: the cooking metal

    Aluminium conducts heat several times better than titanium, which means an evenly heated pot and food that does not scorch. It is heavier than titanium and lighter than stainless, and it dents more easily than either. Hard-anodized aluminium adds a durable surface that resists scratching and sticking.

    Stainless: toughest, heaviest

    Stainless steel takes abuse that dents aluminium and survives being scrubbed with anything. It is heavy and conducts heat unevenly, though less badly than titanium. It suits car camping and group cooking where weight does not matter and durability does.

    Rehydrating freeze-dried meals in a pouch means you only boil water — buy titanium and save the weight. Cooking actual food in the pot means aluminium. Group car camping with cast-iron-level abuse means stainless.

    Watch the rim and handle regardless of metal

    Titanium rims get extremely hot and thin metal edges are uncomfortable to drink from. Folding handles that lock are worth more than the material debate — a handle that flops while you lift a full pot of boiling water is the actual hazard in camp cooking.

Can I cook real food in a titanium pot?
Boiling and simple rehydrating, yes. Anything that sticks or scorches burns in the hotspot. Constant stirring and low heat help and do not eliminate it.
Is hard-anodized aluminium worth it?
Yes for cooking — the surface resists scratching and sticking far better than bare aluminium, at modest extra weight and cost.
What about non-stick coatings?
They make cleanup far easier and wear off with metal utensils and abrasive scrubbing. Use a plastic or wooden utensil if you buy one.
