The most common way sleeping bags die is being left compressed in a stuff sack for months. The second most common is never being washed, because body oils gradually mat the insulation. Both are entirely avoidable.
- 1
Store it uncompressed, always
Between trips a bag belongs in a large cotton or mesh storage sack, hung in a closet, or loose under a bed. Compression permanently damages both down clusters and synthetic fibres. This single habit is the difference between a bag lasting fifteen years and five.
- 2
Wash less often than you think, and use the right soap
Two or three times a season for heavy use, once a year for occasional. Use a down-specific wash for down and a technical cleaner for synthetic. Regular detergent strips down's natural oils and leaves residue that reduces loft.
- 3
Use a front-loading machine, gently
Never a top-loader with a central agitator — it will tear baffles. Front-load on gentle with cold or warm water, then run an extra rinse cycle to clear all soap. Support the bag's weight when moving it wet; a saturated down bag is heavy enough to rip internal baffles under its own weight.
- 4
Dry it thoroughly with tennis balls
Tumble dry on low with two or three clean tennis balls or dryer balls to break up clumps. This takes hours, not minutes — a down bag can need three to four hours. Stopping early leaves damp clumps inside that will mildew. Pull it out periodically and break up clumps by hand.
- 5
Extend the intervals with a liner
A sleeping bag liner absorbs the body oils and dirt that eventually mat insulation, and it washes in a normal load. Using one roughly halves how often the bag itself needs washing.
