Sunscreen gets all the attention and is the least reliable layer, because it depends on you applying enough and reapplying on schedule. Clothing does not. Building sun protection from fabric outward and using sunscreen for what fabric cannot cover is both more effective and less work.
- 1
Start with clothing, not sunscreen
A UPF-rated sun hoody or long-sleeve shirt protects continuously without reapplication, does not sweat off, and is often cooler than bare skin in direct sun because it blocks radiant heat. Covering your arms and torso with fabric removes most of your sunscreen surface area immediately.
- 2
Cover the head properly
A brimmed hat protects the face and, with a wide enough brim or a cape, the ears and back of neck. Baseball caps leave the ears and neck exposed, which is exactly where sun damage accumulates on hikers over years.
- 3
Protect your eyes
UV exposure to the eyes causes real damage, and reflected UV off water, sand, and snow roughly doubles it. Full UV-blocking sunglasses are not optional at altitude or on snow, where snow blindness is a genuine and painful injury.

Apply sunscreen where fabric cannot reach
Face, ears, neck, hands, and any gap at the wrist or ankle. Apply thickly, before you leave rather than at the trailhead, and reapply roughly every two hours — sooner if sweating heavily.

Cover the spots people always miss
The tops of ears, the part line in your hair, the back of the neck under a pack collar, the tops of hands on trekking poles, the underside of the chin and nose when near water or snow, and lips. Lip balm with SPF is the single most forgotten item and lips burn badly.

Use timing and terrain
UV peaks in the middle of the day. Starting early gets the exposed sections done in weaker light and puts you in shade during peak hours. At altitude, UV increases meaningfully with elevation, and snow and water reflect it back at you from below.
