Why you never get the advertised range, what actually drains a battery, and how to make it last years.

Advertised range figures assume the lowest assist setting, a light rider, flat ground, and mild weather. Real rides have none of those. Understanding what actually drains a battery lets you plan rides that end at the trailhead rather than a mile short of it.

    What determines real range

    Assist level dominates — the highest setting can consume two to three times what the lowest does. After that: total weight including rider and gear, elevation gain, tyre pressure and tread, headwind, and temperature. Cold weather reduces available capacity substantially, sometimes by 20-30% near freezing.

    Do the arithmetic before a big ride

    Watt-hours divided by roughly 15-25 watt-hours per mile gives a working estimate for mixed trail riding on moderate assist. A 500Wh battery at 20Wh per mile is about 25 miles. Plan for the pessimistic end and treat anything better as a bonus.

    Manage assist deliberately

    Use the lowest setting that keeps you moving comfortably, and save high assist for climbs. Riders who leave the bike in maximum assist and then run out of battery halfway usually blame the battery rather than the setting.

    Charge and store for longevity

    Lithium batteries age fastest at full charge and at high temperatures. For daily use, charging to full is fine; for storage over weeks, leave it around half charge in a cool place indoors. Never store a battery in a hot car or a freezing garage, and never charge a battery that has been below freezing until it warms up.

    Know what a failing battery looks like

    Gradually shorter range across many rides is normal ageing. Sudden range collapse, refusal to charge, swelling, heat during charging, or any smell warrants stopping use immediately and contacting the manufacturer or a qualified shop rather than continuing to use it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I charge to 100% every time?
For regular riding, yes, it is simplest. If the bike will sit unused for weeks, storing at around half charge in a cool place is better for long-term capacity.
Can I carry a spare battery?
On many systems, yes, and they are heavy and expensive. For long rides it is the only reliable way to extend range beyond the pack you have.
Why is my range worse in winter?
Lithium chemistry delivers less capacity in cold. Keeping the battery indoors until you leave, and insulating it on the bike, recovers some of the loss.
